(March 5, 2001) - iPass Inc., a premier provider of global remote Internet access services, and Certicom (Nasdaq:CERT; TSE:CIC), a leading provider of mobile e-business security, today announced an alliance that will enable mobile professionals to easily and securely access corporate databases and applications from a handheld device anywhere in the world. The alliance includes joint sales & marketing initiatives, interoperability and compatibility testing, development roadmap coordination, and the exchange of support, tools and training. iPass is first to market in delivering secure, global remote Internet connectivity through multiple devices including notebooks, PDAs and desktops. The iPassConnect PDA for Palm OS® and iPassConnect PDA for the Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PC and other Windows-powered mobile devices gives remote users access to the Internet and enterprise resources from their handheld device using iPass' global network of over 10,000 points of presence (POPs) in 150 countries worldwide. Certicom's movianVPN is a broadly interoperable VPN client for handheld devices that implements IPSec/ IKE protocols for establishing a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to encrypt all traffic between the device and the corporate gateway. "Leveraging Certicom's expertise in mobile security with iPass' extensive remote access network allows us to meet the needs of an increasingly mobile workforce," said Michael Mansouri, iPass chairman and CEO. "The joining of the two technologies reinforces our continuing and significant efforts to enhance our remote access capabilities for our customers and partners." Certicom is the industry's only provider of an IPSec VPN client for handheld devices such as the Windows CE and Palm OS. Certicom's movianVPN is interoperable with leading VPN gateway products from Cisco, Alcatel, Check Point, Intel, Nortel Networks, Radguard and Symantec, enabling enterprises to leverage their network security investments to include PDAs. Once a secure wireline connection is established with the iPassConnect PDA client, a user simply launches movianVPN to establish a secure VPN tunnel between itself and the gateway, and logs in for permission from the remote location to access company databases and files. "movianVPN places the resources of the enterprise literally at the user's fingertips, and iPass provides the connectivity to do it seamlessly from anywhere in the world with a wireline connection," said Jennifer Vancini, co-Managing Director, movianVPN at Certicom. "The movianVPN-iPass partnership is a powerful combination that brings new levels of secure and convenient access to mission critical data using the latest handheld devices."
